Heat pump vs gas boiler — the numbers, and every grant that changes them

Real bills and measured SCOPs, submitted by owners

Manufacturers publish laboratory SCOPs. Installers publish design intentions. Nobody publishes what heat pumps actually consume in real houses, because nobody has an incentive to. This is an attempt to build that dataset in public.

This dataset is empty on day one, and saying so is more useful than faking rows. The form below is wired to nothing until you connect it to your own endpoint — see README.md.

What measured performance actually looks like

Before any of our readers submit a single figure, here is what the published studies already show. This is the benchmark your own numbers will be compared against — and the reason we treat a datasheet SCOP of 4.2 as marketing rather than data.

Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project
The first large UK dataset of in-use performance across a deliberately broad spread of housing types, including houses that would normally be called unsuitable.

MCS-installed heat pumps, 2025/26
The median has moved up by roughly 10 % against earlier benchmarks. Installation practice is improving; the physics has not changed.

Reported in-use range across UK studies
Against manufacturer COP claims of 4.0–5.0 measured in test conditions. The gap is the single most under-communicated fact in the market.

Why field figures sit below datasheet figures. SPF (seasonal performance factor) measured in real houses is not the same quantity as a datasheet SCOP. The most rigorous studies measure to the SEPEMO H4 boundary, which includes the outdoor unit, backup and immersion heaters, and circulation pumps — everything the meter sees. Datasheet SCOP excludes most of that and is measured at a fixed flow temperature in a laboratory. Expect field figures to sit below datasheet figures for that reason alone, before any question of installation quality.

The dataset that already does this properly

HeatpumpMonitor.org

OpenEnergyMonitor community

A public dashboard of individual heat pump systems sharing measured performance, using MID-approved Class 1 electricity and Class 2 heat metering to the SEPEMO H4 boundary. Per-system pages with annual SPF, and an analysis of SPF against design flow temperature — the relationship this whole site is built around.

Why this does not exist anywhere else

Every party in the market has a reason not to publish in-use performance. A few hundred structured records — house type, year, system, measured annual kWh — would be the only open dataset of its kind in Europe. It is also the sort of first-hand, verifiable information that is worth more than another restatement of a manufacturer's brochure.
